Know what you're wearing
Which demon is this?
An oni. Not a hannya. The two get mixed up constantly, including by most people selling them.
- What it is
The horned ogre of Japanese folklore. Wide upward horns, fangs, a roaring mouth, usually an iron club in hand.
- What it traditionally means
A face fierce enough that it's traditionally believed to scare off worse things. Every February at Setsubun, people throw beans and shout “oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi”: demons out, good fortune in.
- The colours
Red oni are the classic Setsubun demon, the ones the beans are thrown at. Black and green oni turn up in some tellings too.

FAQ
Questions worth asking
Why does this cost more than a plain $10 face mask?
Because you're not buying a plain face mask. You're buying the artwork and the story behind it, checked to be the right figure. Most masks in this category sell a vague “Japanese demon” look. This one is an oni, and we can tell you exactly why that matters.
Will it fit my head?
It's a one-size stretch tube that pulls over your head and sits snug over your nose and mouth. Measuring takes 30 seconds: see the size guide.
How long does shipping really take, and where does it ship from?
Shipping is free. It ships from China, and typical delivery is 7–12 business days to the US and Canada. You get tracking by email once it's on the way.
Is it disrespectful to wear?
Oni have been painted, carved and worn in Japan for centuries: in scroll paintings, on roof tiles, as festival and Setsubun masks, and in traditional tattooing. The figure has long been part of streetwear too. What we'd call disrespectful is getting it wrong: calling it a hannya, or claiming it means something it doesn't. So we don't.
What's the difference between an oni and a hannya?
An oni is an ogre-like demon from folklore: wide upward horns, a broad face, a roaring mouth. A hannya is a Noh theatre mask of a woman transformed by jealousy: long horns sweeping back, a pointed chin, a wide grimace. Check the horns and the chin first. Full breakdown.
